Basking Sharks Feature in Ultimate Dive Sites Book
Dec 05 2024
Great news this week. Basking sharks have made it into the new book, Ultimate Dive Sites by Todd Thimios. Due to be released in Jan 2025, Todd has scoured the globe for 50 of the best dive sites to add to your bucket list. It will make a great addition to any marine life enthusiast, diver or snorkeler’s library. Ranging from orcas in the Arctic, manta rays in the Maldives to crocodiles in Cuba, a wealth of inspiration for animal encounters & adventure travel.
Basking sharks, being the world’s second largest fish, features on many peoples wish list. However they are one of the most difficult species to capture. Firstly you need to be in the right place at the right time, along with conditions being optimal for their plankton prey to be at the surface. This is what you need to be able to find their location to start with. Then you need suitable sea conditions for swimming and be able to have an encounter without disturbing the animal. You cannot bait for them, or attract them in any way, and they don’t need to be at the surface to breathe like a cetacean, so the stakes are high.
However, like all difficult things, that is part of the attraction and makes any encounter with them even more special. We are lucky that we even have some chances t0 see them, given the extensive hunting in the 20th century. Thankfully, we now we have a marine protected area for them and, hopefully, their numbers are recovering following the cessation of hunting in 1994.
Grab a copy of Todd’s book for some inspiration and join us in the Hebrides for an adventure of a lifetime to look for the big fish!
