Snorkel Diver Course (Snorkelling)
As a BSAC Snorkel School we run a variety of courses however the Snorkel Diver is the main all round course. This covers sheltered pool and coastal sessions along with progression leading into boat snorkelling. In addition to the standard course content, we add in a lot of extra knowledge on UK specific coastal sea conditions and how to preapre for it. Our instructors and guides are marine biologists so you'll also get to learn a lot about marine life along the way.
The aim of the course is to prepare you to be confident in both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to be able to plan and safely conduct snorkelling around the UK coast (and as such should prepare you for pretty much everywhere else!).
The course can be flexible with participants initial abilities and will suit both those very new to the sport, those with some limited holiday experience, or perhaps those who have snorkelled previously be have had a long lay off.
As this course takes the best part of three days we have one date planned for June, we can also run this is Sept/October but would be dependent on participant numbers.
This course of perfect for anyone considering coming on any of our tours, whether than be a mulit-day shark tour or even our orca tour to give a good base level of experience. This will enable you to enjoy these tours far more with some solid experience under your belt.

Our course starts on Friday afternoon, with a few hours of introduction and classroom theory session. Here we'll introduce snorkelling techniques, a variety of equipment and safety considerations for sheltered waters. We'll get to know each other of course and we'll have plenty kit on hand to play with!
We'll then have a long session in the swimming pool where you can try out different equipment and we'll teach you either all the basic techniques if you are very new. Or we can coach you in your previous experience to really solidify proper technique so you have a great base for heading into open water. This part is all about laying strong foundations.
Today we have a full day ahead, again starting off in the classroom. We'll build on what you learned in the sessions yesterday and apply that to heading into open coastal water. This course is good as it adds in environmental considerations along with planning safe snorkelling sessions. Using all our experience we'll discuss many insights into sea conditions, weather and planning a safe, but enjoyable trip.
In the afternoon we'll then head to a sheltered coast around the Oban area. Depending on the weather and tides, we'll pick and appropriate place on the day. We'll build on the practical skills learned in the pool, and then the theory of understanding conditions for being in the sea. You'll kit up in our quality snorkelling gear for open water including our 8mm hooded wetsuits to keep you warm.
By the end of the day we should have covered most of the course content leading onto the final session.
Today we'll head out for a full day on the boat which will be some more challenging locations and sessions. This is where you'll put all the learning from the last couple of days into practice. We'll get you leading a snorkel session after planning around the conditions we have at the time.
Hopefully we'll have enough time for some fun sessions on the day too and we'll get to explore kelp forests and sea grass beds, look for fish, urchins, starfish, crabs, lobsters and soft corals. If you're lucky we may be in a place where seals live nearby and we can have an encounter with them!
Heading back we'll have a short theory test, but don't worry you'll blitz if following the last few days!
